The entire internal combustion engine includes a cylinder block which
moves with the help of cylinders and pistons. The block is covered with a
cylinder head. Some engines include multiple heads according to the
configuration of the engine.
The cylinder head can develop problems if it is not maintained properly
or due to the wear and tear of components. Professional technicians can
correct the problems of these components without removing the head from
the engine. However, removal of these components is essential if there
are other persistent problems.
Features And Problems:
The head components,
which include the valves and other parts that operate the valves such as
the camshaft, rocker arms, springs, lifters and so forth, are
specifically designed to maintain the heat and pressure in the
cylinder.
Different problems may arise in these components. The rocker arms,
camshaft and the valve keepers can become noisy and it may weaken in due
course of time. Leakage of seals and cover gaskets of the valves are
some of the other problems that can occur in these components. In some
cases, there may be problems with the valve train which can cause
leakage of the valves and loss of engine compression.
Tips To Inspect:
For serious head problems, it
is vital to remove the head and its components. There are several
things to consider while inspecting the interior components which
include damages or cracks in valve guides, burned seat valves and so
forth. It is also essential to inspect the other components and check
for damages. Measure the sizes of the components and compare it with the
service manual of the automobile.
